Our History
The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa was established pursuant to the resolution of the 6th Arab Summit Conference held in Algiers on 28 November 1973, with the purpose of promoting Arab-African economic cooperation.
A few months later, 18 countries members of the League of Arab States (shareholders) signed an establishing agreement on February 18, 1974. The Bank started its operations in March 1975 and has been embodying, over 50 years, an authentic Arab-African solidarity.
The Bank is an independent international institution with full administrative and financial autonomy, governed by the establishing agreement and the principles of international law.
Initially headquartered in Khartoum (Sudan) with a branch in Cairo (Egypt), the Bank relocated to Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, further to the decision of the Board of Governors in April 2023, in the midst of the tensions in its Host Country.
